There was a time when the hooves of the buffalo beat like a drum across the plains, but during the winter of 1872-1873, over 1.5 million were slaughtered for hides alone; an estimated 5,000 buffalo killed each day for the next three years. By 1884, only an estimated *325 had survived. All that remained of this fiercely proud beast were the eyes of one who had seen the heights to which men can soar and the depths to which they can fall.
